Já fazia um tempo que queria republicar este texto meu que saiu no Snipe Bulletin fall/winter 2021/2022 hoje me pareceu um bom dia!

Outubro de 2021. O Brasil acabou de sediar nosso primeiro Campeonato Mundial Feminino de Snipe em São Paulo, Guarapiranga, Yacht Club Paulista.
Para mim este foi um sonho realizado em tantos níveis que só posso tentar compartilhar com vocês todas as maravilhas que foram alcançadas.
Se estou aqui escrevendo essa história de mulheres no 14º Mundial Feminino, é porque estou sobre os ombros de gigantes. Na Classe Snipe há várias mulheres que pavimentaram a estrada, ou melhor, velejaram as raias antes de nós!
Brasileiras desbravadoras como Bibi Juetz que com a única tripulação feminina nos Brasileiros de 1952, 1953, 1957, conquistou o vice campeonato geral nas 3 oportunidades. Antes dela Margrete Schmidt que velejava com seu irmão Eric (sim o irmão gêmeo de Axel). E muitas mulheres de todo o mundo que deram a ideia de criar o Mundial Feminino e deram continuidade ao campeonato.
A classe snipe começou a organizar o Mundial Feminino em 1994 e desde então tivemos 14 edições do campeonato: na Europa, Ásia, América do Norte e do Sul, e esses campeonatos sempre promovem a Vela Feminina nessas regiões.
Tive a honra de facilitar o processo e fazer acontecer desta vez.
Devo confessar que a maior realização deste evento está em cada uma das mulheres inspiradoras que participaram!
Você consegue imaginar 40 snipes com 80 mulheres navegando na mesma raia?
Naquela raia tivemos um espectro tão amplo de mulheres formidáveis representando cada fase do ciclo de vida feminino!
as que estão chegando do optimist,
as que já passaram pelo 420 e pelo 29er,
aquelas que foram campeãs mundiais de 420 e não velejavam juntas há 15 anos e decidiram velejar novamente neste campeonato,
também velejadoras do laser (não era ILCA naquela época…) medalhistas pan-americanas,
uma delas tinha acabado de descobrir que estava grávida,
e outra que recebeu a notícia de que estava em remissão do câncer de mama e veio da Suíça para comemorar conosco,
tantas que não velejavam mais por vários motivos…
ter filhos, criá-los…
e a que voltou a velejar de snipe ainda amamentando, porque queria estar nesse campeonato,
muitas mulheres que nem sabiam que podiam ser timoneiras, e esse foi o primeiro campeonato delas no leme! Foi preciso um mundial para elas saberem que poderiam fazê-lo!
6 equipes eram juniores e 7 equipes eram master, todas pelas regras da classe!

se você adicionar as idades das duas velejadoras no barco, o resultado mais baixo foi 30 (14+16) e o mais alto foi 111 (54 + 57).
O que todas nós tínhamos em comum? A felicidade de velejar!
E o que essas mulheres maravilhosas fazem quando não estão velejando? (além de planejar a próxima oportunidade de velejar…)
TUDO! Uma mulher que veleja pode fazer o que quiser!
No nosso tempo livre somos alunas da escola ou na faculdade, somos dentistas, estilistas, fisioterapeutas, veterinárias, nutricionistas, aquela cirurgiã pediátrica que está se especializando em neurocirurgia, e aquelas engenheiras que estão fazendo mestrado e doutorado, engenheiras ambientais, educadoras, químicas, jornalistas, advogadas, uma catequista, velejadoras em campanha olímpica, artistas, mulheres que estão mudando o mundo de tantas maneiras! Inspirando nossas juniores, inspirando outras mulheres.
Antes de nos reunirmos no Yacht Club Paulista em outubro de 2021, já sabíamos que seria uma experiência única na vida.
Depois deste campeonato soubemos que todas estaríamos aguardando ansiosamente o próximo campeonato feminino e não mediremos esforços para chegar lá!

October 2021. Brazil just hosted our first Snipe Women’s Worlds Championship in São Paulo, Guarapiranga, Yacht Club Paulista.

For me this was a dream coming true in so many levels that I can only try to share with you all the wonders that were achieved.

If I am here writing this feminine story of the 14th Women’s Worlds Championship, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants. At the Snipe Class there are several women that paved the road, I mean sailed the racecourse before us!

Brave Brazilian women like Bibi Juetz that was the only women’s only crew at the Brazilian Nationals in 1957. Before her Margrete Schmidt that used to sail with her brother Eric (yes the twin brother of Axel). And many women from all over the world that had the idea and kept the Snipe Women’s Worlds going on.

The snipe class started to organize Women’s Worlds in 1994 and since then we had 14 editions of the championship in Europe, Asia, North and South America, and these championships always promote Women’s Sailing in those regions.

I had the honor to facilitate the process and make it happen this time.

I must confess, the greater accomplishment of this event was in each of the inspiring women that were there!

Can you picture 40 snipes with 80 women sailing the same race course?

In that race course we had such a wide spectrum of formidable women representing so much of the feminine life cycle!

The ones just coming from the optimist,

the ones that had already passed to the 420 and the 29er,

and those that were 420 world champions and haven’t sailed for 15 years and decided to sail again in this championship,

also sailors from the laser (it was not ILCA at that time…) Pan-American medalists!

one of them just knew that she was pregnant,

and another that got the news she was in remission from breast cancer and came all the way from Switzerland to celebrate with us,

so many that were not sailing anymore for various reasons…

having kids, raising them…

and the one that came back sailing snipes while still breast feeding, because she wanted to be in this championship.

A lot of women that not even knew they could helm, and this was their first championship handling the tiller! It took a worlds for them to know they could do it!

6 crews were junior, and 7 crews were masters, all by the class rules!

Two grandmas!

If you add the ages of the two women in the boat the lowest outcome was 30 (14+16) and the highest was 111 (54 + 57).

What did we all have in common? The happiness of sailing!

And what do these wonderful women do when they are not sailing? (besides planning the next opportunity to sail…)

EVERYTHING!

A woman that sails can do whatever she wants!

In our non sailing time we are school students, dentists, fashion designers, physical therapists, veterinarians, nutritionists, that pediatric surgeon that is specializing in neurosurgery, and those engineers that are doing their masters and doctorate, a catechist, sailors in an Olympic campaign, artists, women that are changing the world in so many ways! Inspiring our juniors, inspiring other women.

Before gathering at Yacht Club Paulista in October 2021, we already knew it was going to be a once in a lifetime experience.

After this championship we know that we all will be looking forward the next women’s only championship and will measure no efforts to get there!
